It struck me that if a barrel can be too short to get the most out of a given round and can also be too long, there must be an optimum barrel length for a given round. Is that easily ascertainable? Ma Deuce's use a 45" barrel but none of the 50BMG rifles are anywhere close to that.

Everything is a compromise in manufacturing.Trying to find the formula for a product that fits as many needs as possible, for as cheap as possible. The barrel compromise is velocity increase-vs-practical weight.

A rule of thumb that I read in some book long ago was that the barrel length should be 90 diameters long. The original M-16 barrel length was 20" and .223x90=20.07. Obviously .50x90=45, which is the M2 barrel length. So it seems to check out. What's funny is that if you run numbers in interior ballistics programs you'll find that 99% of the powder is burned well before 90 diameters.

Thanks Mark. I became curious when looking at the Remington web site where I saw .308 rifles with 20", 24", 26" and 27.25" barrels. This made me wonder how you'd determine which would be best. The 45" M2 barrel also came to mind.

Once the powder is fully burned, isn't any remaining barrel slowing the bullet down unnecessarily? Mark, you once mentioned that you sell 25 times as many standard barrels as the longer ones. Is there much difference in performance? Have you experimented with even longer barrels? Thanks.

I like this topic Smile When I bought my BFG, I wondered too about the 29 inch barrel vs. the 36 inch. I went with the 29" because I didn't think it would matter much, and it came with a case big enough to fit.

What about barrel length with the DTC rounds>? how would it effect those?

The DTC is pretty much the same as BMG.The same projectile is used. And the same amount of powder. The volume of the DTC case is actually slightly more than the BMG,not less.
