| yah, it was a long time coming. We'd figured out how to do AOW Form 1 builds and a couple had used an 07FFL/02SOT to AOW PG-only hostguns that we suppled so that it could be shipped back directly to the owner on a Form 4, but finding a civilian-friendly SOT willing to sell AOWs was impossible. Most either didn't understand that AOWs were exempt from CA's SBS regs, or more likely were afraid of upsetting local LE or CA DOJ. |

| ke6guj, I see you posted on Calguns that we don't do 870-based SUPER-SHORTYs any more. As of a few months ago, we do again! Remington started shipping the pistol gripped guns again. |

and approved Form 4s to the buyer have been approved as well. Thanks for the help in increasing the number of legal AOWs in CA.
Now all we need is for Serbu to submit some Super Shorties for Roster testing. If they passed, heads at CADOJ would explode if they had to list the Super Shorty on the "Roster of not unsafe handguns" But, it probably wouldnt be worth the expense to do so when you can make them roster-exempt so easily. |

So I can get myself a CA-legal super shorty? OK, someone's gotta sit me down and take me through this, step by step!

I'd point you to my AOW thread on Calguns to start, http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=82693 . It goes over all the detail on why AOWs like the Super Shorty are legal.
but basically, AOWs like the Super Shorty are legal in CA and you can make one yourself, or buy one from an NFA dealer in CA. There are a couple NFA dealers in CA that are civilian-friendly. One is in Orange County, OCArmory and another one is is Taft, Ten Percent Firearms.
the trick with AOWs is that you don't need CADOJ Permits, just CLEO sign-off (or use a Trust to bypass the CLEO sign-off requirement). IIRC, OCarmory was selling SSS's for around $700 + $100NFA fee to deal with all the paperwork. They have a lawyer lined up to draft trusts for those tht need them. So, you walk in there and you get the Form 4 to fill out. IF you have a trust, they can finish filling it out and send it out right then. If you don't have a trust, you take the Form 4 to your CLEO to get signed (not likely, so most people go the trust method). The Form 4 gets sent in, you wait 2-4 months for ATF to approve it. Once the form 4 comes back in approved, you go back to the dealer to do the DROS and do the 10-day wait. At the end of the 10-day wait, you go back to the dealer and pick up your new blaster.
One thing special that AOWs have to deal with in CA is that the handgun safety roster still applies. So, the Super Shorty, when sold to you, is a single-shot handgun, which is roster exempt. but once you take it home, it is just a matter of removing the magazine block and now you have a standard Super Shorty in CA. |

/TCP | you're welcome. I figured out that the trust option would work for us in CA and got ATF to approve Form 1 and Form 4 AOW apps in CA. Before then it was mainly only an option for LEOs that could get CLEO sign-off. But the trust option opened it up to everyone. But much of the thanks needs to go to OCarmory for taking the ball and running with it by getting their SOT to deal in them. And additional thanks to guys like Mark willing to sell to them. |
