I am confused as to the source of the receiver used to build the Super Shorty.

On the Super Shorty info page it states

The SUPER-SHORTY is based on a Mossberg Maverick (also available on 500 or 590 at additional cost) 12-gauge shotgun which came from the factory with a pistol grip

I have gone to the Mossberg site as well as the Maverick site and the only shotgun I see with a pistol grip is the Mossberg Cruiser model.

Did you special order some Mavericks with a pistol grip? Can you confirm for me that the original weapon was never assembled with a buttstock?

I am currently in a discussion on another board about the legality of a Super Shorty in Michigan. After much reading of our state laws, I believe that the Super Shorty is perfectly legal here provided the doner gun (Maverick) was never assembled with a buttstock.

Thanks for the input.

Well i dont think that you need to worry about the reciever Mark has been doing this for a long time, if there was a problem i think the ATF would have said somthing a long time ago, but hey stay informed and cover your a$$. The ATF as dumb as they are they know what is going on some times they knew about a suppressor that i had ordered and that the dealler drop shipped to me when i turned it in.

Yeah, I know he has been at this a while as I have been oogling his products for quite a while. Very Happy

I realize that other states have a much looser set of restrictions than Michigan does. My problem is that I am kind of at a disagreement with others as to the legality of the Super Shorty here.

I have someone saying that the SS is based on a Maverick shotgun. Reading the site bears this out, but it also says that the Maverick came equipped with a pistol grip.

I haven't been able to find a maverick equipped with a pistol grip. I am just trying to confirm that the Maverick was never equipped with a buttstock.

I am learning my way around when it comes to machine gun laws but I am not real up to speed on federal laws in regards to AOWs. However, I do know that if the Maverick was ever equipped with a buttstock, the SS would be an illegal short barrel shotgun in Michigan.

If Mark can confirm that the Mavericks he is using have never been assembled with a buttstock, it would go a long ways towards my arguing that they are indeed legal here. It would also give me something new to start saving my pennies for. Wink

The SUPER-SHORTY is registered with the BATF as an AOW. To qualify as an AOW, the gun HAD to NEVER have a full buttstock attached. I'll leave the rest of my answer for you to deduce. FWIW, we've registered a few of them as Short-Barreled Shotguns, per customer request. And the funny thing is that it doesn't matter what kind of buttstock was on the gun if you're going the SBS registration route.

Thank you Mark, you have bolstered my argument for ownership of one of your fine weapons here in Michigan.

Knowing this, I can find absolutely nothing in the Michigan compiled laws that would prohibit ownership.

People here are convinced that the Super Shorty is a short barrel shotgun (and prohibited) per Michigan's laws but a strict reading of the law shows something a bit different. According to my reading of the state law, the Super Shorty would be considered a pistol here.

Thanks again for the reply, its nice to see that my next stamp will only be a 5 dollar stamp as opposed to the 200 dollar variety.
