I shot my Serbu 36" for the first time this weekend. SWEET!!!!
I faced three questions/problems that I would appreciate any input on.
The first two are gun related (equipment) and the third is cockpit related (the pilot).
1). The first two shots I made, after ejecting the brass and on attempting to insert the next round, there was a problem.
There was a piece of metal, shapped like a tounge depressor sticking up from the trigger area preventing me from loading the next round. The piece was oriented such that its plain was parallel to that of the barrel (like a valve in the open position rather than closed). Both times it was easy to push/pivot the piece downward toward the butt of the gun, and on closing the bolt a little bit, it stayed down. After the second round was shot, I have not had the problem again (50 more rounds through it).
2). In the 60 rounds fired, I had 15 misfires using the Barrett ammo. On the first 10 shots, I had 5 misfires, then 10 more on the subsequent 50.
For the first 10 shots, I placed the gun on safety first. For the subsequent rounds, I did not use the safety. 14 of the misfires fired on the second try. One did not (I did not try it for a third time).
Mark particularly, ANY thoughts on these two are appreciated.
Now for the embarrasing part.
3). How do I clean this gun?
For the information of any respondants, I am not familiar with an AR - I am from the M14 generation and have otherwise shot 308/30-06 rifles.
I need some really simply worded instructions for cleaning - have the equipment for Paul Jr./Romona.
ALL help is appreciated here.
Thanks, |

Well, I'm glad to hear that you like the gun, though if I'd had the problems you'd mentioned with a new gun that I'd spent quite a bit of money for, I'd be pissed! First question: Is this a new gun? I shoot every gun that leaves here and they don't have problems like you mentioned. The "tongue depressor" is the hammer, and it seems very odd that it wouldn't be caught by the sear the first couple of times but did subsequently. Maybe there was just some crap in the sear notch. I can't remember the last misfire I had (except when someone "cough...cough!!" left out the firing pin). Sometimes guys don't have the bolt handle all the way down when they pull the trigger. So be sure it's down, or the camming slot in the bolt body will block the tongue depressor from reaching the firing pin. If you continue to have problems (used gun or not), please call the shop and we'll get it figured out. As far as cleaning, my usual routine is to hand the gun to Tony, so I'm not much help there. I'm sure some of the guys here can help out.

There is an allen bolt you remove from the bottom front of the metal brace that has holes in it to swing up the butt pad. On the side opposite the bolt handle, remove a smaller allen screw through a hole to take the bolt handle off (NOTE orientation of handle!). Now you can pull the bolt out from the rear. Run a cleaning rod down the barrel like any other gun. Brush off the bolt face and assemble in reverse order.
Good luck and shoot straight

the cleaning gear that StatisticsFan has is a very good one, I think: one piece SS rod, bore guide. i recall the kit being about $150 or so but if
you're interested, visit AAAammo dot com. Cleaning procedure is quite
normal. if you really need to, the lower drops out after drifting a couple
of pins. _________________ --- raymond-

Brownells sells a .50 specific cleaning kit which has a 2 piece rod. it might not be quite long enough to clean your 36"er from the breech though..
But the price is right- roughly $50 with FFL discount. I think it will splice onto a longer rod too if you need more reach (never had a reason to try it though)
