Flying back from Melbourne yesterday in what were supposed to be VFR conditions. I started out at 1500 feet and ended up all the way down to 600 feet in order to stay under the clouds! I accepted my death at least once, especially when my GPS told me that there were obstacles ahead (in the form of LOTS of towers, in this case) and all of a sudden there was zero visibility out of the airplane. I bailed at Bartow (KBOW) and hung out for a couple of hours. The flight home from there was much better, as the ceiling had lifted. I won't be flying for a few days because I don't be able to meet the "8 hours from bottle to throttle" rule!!

IFR = "I Follow Roads"
You're doing great! Nothing wrong with spending a little time at a quality airport diner while the ceilings lift. Discretion is certainly the better part of valor.
Keep on flying...now is a perfect time to work on that instrument rating!

| There are a lot of old pilots and there are a lot of bold pilots but there are very few old bold pilots. |

Mark, I know how you feel.... I had the same thing happen to me the other day. Im flying along and BLAM! thick heavy clouds move in!
Then it gets worse
But finaly the clouds begin to break apart and im flying the clear blue ( well partly cloudy blue skies) skies again.
Well, ok I have to admit I was in no real danger... I even got up went and made myself a sandwich and got a beer while the auto pilot took over... and then again, if it did crash... I could press the reset switch and start over again |
