Got the rifle last week, SN 1034.Shot it and the trigger has a lot of creep in it. I haven't put it on a scale yet, it "feels" in the 3 1/2 pound range. But it doesn't break cleanly. You have to pull it forever. Anyone done a trigger job on these yet?

Mine was good right out of the box. However, I still polished the seer's mating surfaces (okay, I was bored). It took about five minutes to get to the high polished point, and produced some marginal improvement.

You could use the "undocumented feature" that many BFG shooters know about, and that I use at matches. Simply put the safety on and pull the trigger. Once you take the safety off and you're ready to fire, most, if not all, of the creep is out. I started with the same sear angles as the AR-15/M-16 on the initial hammer design, but changed it due to the heavy (almost 12 pounds!) trigger pull. The AR's sear angles result in a somewhat safer trigger/hammer mechanism; if you start to pull the trigger and then let off, the trigger and hammer completely "reset". I.e., they are fully re-engaged. Not so on the BFG, but customer feedback dictated that we go with a lighter pull rather than a slightly safer mechanism. If you really want to help the trigger pull you can polish the engagement surfaces. People who want to get radical can grind off some of the engagement surface on the hammer. I can't officially recommend this, of course, as it can result in an unsafe firearm.

Mr. Serbu,

You fixed it!. I tried the "set trigger" trick you described and THAT is the type of trigger I was expecting. Thanks a lot!

BTW I'm going to put your comments on biggerhammer.net for the masses.

Thanks again

One other thing you guys might want to check out, since the BFG uses an AR group; on AR15.com they have a "15-minute trigger job" that worked exceptionally well on my AR. It consists of bending the trigger spring slightly, and clipping one arm of the hammer spring. Best of all, if you don't like it, you've only ruined $2 worth of easily replaceable springs.

Only thing I don't know is how hard .50BMG primers are; perhaps with a clipped hammer spring there won't be enough force to ignite the primer (not generally a problem with .223).

YMMV,

/TCP
