I have recently wondered, "If one were to convert a Semi auto 50 BMG (Like an M82A1) rifle to full auto, would it be possible to fire from the shoulder." I think it would be an interesting scientific test, if one had the quriosity and legal ability to do so.

Guess that would be a lot like a BAR in .30/06....only much bigger! Got to wonder about sustained fire from an 82, due to the reciprocating barrel that comes in and out of battery, and if it could withstand dumping a mag on full auto. Tony might know...but I suspect that at some point the timing and sequence might get out of whack with all those moving parts. Now, I have seen a double tap in an 82 and it sure was a crowd pleaser! Of course, not expecting it, the rifle jumps and dances on that second round....can only imagine a mag full! Would look like a break dancer on the firing bench!!

Now, with the superior Serbu Semi...using a fixed barrell and gas operated system vice the 82's recoil system, I would have to guess that a full auto Serbu might be controlled to a slightly better degree. But only marginally. Heck, there are some who can't control an M-16 on full squirt!! Al B. (SOCAL)

Can't control and M-16?! Must be a midget.

Maybe Mark should build one BFG 50A with a happy switch (and post video).

The Govt. went to 3 shot bursts for a number of reasons....a big one was most shooters can't maintain effective hits on target at a distance with this battle rifle, as the movement between shots continues to widen and degrade aim. Don't confuse this level of shooter (average infantryman) with a tactical SWAT guy, or a special operator in the military. Beau coup rounds for them result in muscle memory for anticipating and correcting for recoil and muzzle rise.

Has nothing to do with the physical size of the shooter with an M-16 or even a 9mm squirt gun, rather training, techinque and lots of rounds fired.

You may recall the M-14 was originally capable of going full-auto and for the most part, that feature was removed by the military as the 7.62mm/.308 was not effective as a shoulder fired weapon on full auto. Lots of noise, first round hit=OK...but then they start rising to the point of low earth orbit!

A shoulder fired full auto .50BMG would have a lot of gas venting, recoil to be addressed, and large metal internal parts moving. That would take some considerable engineering and training to compensate for.....just not sure a full auto shoulder fired .50BMG would be practical. Now...don't confuse practical for fun to try!! Aw, come on! You guys are making me feel bad! You don't think that I keep "FULL-AUTO" in my mind whenever I work on the semi-auto design? The trick is to make it work with just some different trigger/hammer parts, a slight bolt carrier mod, and a registered Drop-In Auto Sear (DIAS) for an AR-15. Having said all that, of course I'm not officially working on figuring out how to convert my semi into a machine gun. For legal and liability reasons, it would be crazy to do it. Right? Damn, too bad those emoticons are still broken.

I live in this big state on the west coast that has a lot of laws and regulations, so I get confused with what is actually legal and what's not on the outside. Are there any types of machine guns, or automatic weapons, that are still legal in other states? Not just pre-ban stuff, but stuff you can actually have made or built.

Yup. There are plenty of states that if you can legally buy a gun... have a clean record and $200 for the tax stamp... you can legally buy a class 3 select fire (semi/full auto) weapon. After the background check from your state and local law enforcement, then the BATF... your favorite class 3 dealer will hand you your weapon. Buy LOTS of ammo and have fun.

It has been said that the Massaholeshits assault weapons ban makes it illegal to have a select fire gun fitting the description of an AW because it can fire semi auto. In other words, you can't have an AR-15, but you can have an M-16 as long as it is full auto only. Rolling Eyes

Is Oregon one of those states? I tried to do some homework, but it's hard to get a straight answer. I'm thinking of moving to Southern Oregon, but it sounds like there are lot of bans in the works up there as well. As of now, does anyone know if you can you still buy full auto's, and high capacity mags up there? Can Mark still make and sell machine guns to some of these states? I have an edm m96 on order, and would also be interested in one of Serbu's semi's, but I was wondering if ever does machine guns anymore? Again, my state has made my head foggy, sorry. Shocked

Oregon has no laws in addition to NFA. If it is legal federally, it is legal in Oregon. MG's, SBR's, DD's, SBS's, and suppressors are all legal to own here. Well, there is a law against incendiary DD's I think.

The AW Ban is history, and I have a bunch of new >10 round mags.

Oregon is also open carry legal and shall issue CHL.

Some cities, Portland in particular, have ordinances prohibiting carrying of weapons without a CHL.

We have one notoriously anti-gun state Senator (Ginny Burdick) who is always trying to ban something, but she never gets very far.

In other words, everything that is illegal in the PRK is legal in Oregon.

It was a freeze, not a ban.

The freeze just made it so that no new machine guns could be made for civilian consumption after May 19, 1986. All of the existing "transferrable" machine guns (somewhere around 200,000 guns?) can still be bought or sold. Companies with a Class 2 manufacturing license (like us) may make new machine guns, but they can only be sold to police, gov't, or dealers with letters from law enforcement seeking demos. Because of the fixed supply and increasing demand, transferrable machine gun prices have gone nuts.
